Focus on Supplements: Creatine

If you are a patient of mine, you have heard me talk about the mixed bag value of supplements. Some are supported by data, others not. Some are expensive and a waste of money, others are quite inexpensive. Some have risk, most have very little to none. And of course, there is always risk of counterfeits and frauds, as there is no FDA oversight with supplements. As such, we always recommend only purchasing supplements that have been tested by a third party with no conflicts of interest, such as Fullscript.

One of my favorite supplements is creatine. Why? It is safe, cheap, and has well documented health benefits. It is one of the lowest hanging fruits that there is as far as supplements go.

What are the potential benefits of daily creatine?

  • Improve exercise performance

  • Increase muscle mass and strength

  • Decrease dehydration and cramping

  • Improve exercise recovery and decrease muscle injury

However, what really excites me about creatine is the potential to improve brain function. There is some evidence that creatine may:

  • Improve memory

  • Reduce risk of dementia

  • Benefit people with neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis

  • Improve mood

Additionally, it has been proposed that creatine may benefit people with diabetes, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis, and low testosterone.

Creatine is one of the most widely studied supplements in existence, and for most people there appears to be a very favorable risk:benefit profile. There are some risks, including weight gain due to water retention, gastro-intestinal symptoms, and excessive sweating.

We offer creatine in our supplement section at The Men’s Center. This is also available on our Fullscript page under our Fitness favorites. You can easily access The Men’s Center Fullscript account at to view all of our favorites as well as their entire supplement formulary. Setting up a Fullscript account via this link takes 10 seconds, is free, and gives you 10% off all supplements with free shipping.
