Earlier in my career I was very dogmatic and rigid regarding “natural” supplements. This was in part due to the fact that there was very little discussion of supplements in medical school. Because for many there was no “proof” of safety or efficacy, I discouraged use. However, there is increasing evidence that some supplements have clinical value. Furthermore I have seen copious anecdotal evidence of the lifestyle enhancement with non-prescription supplements in many of my patients. Over the years, my stance on supplements has become much more pragmatic. If a supplement is affordable, improves quality of life, and does no harm (some can have interactions with prescription drugs), then a trial of supplements is very reasonable, particularly for patients who shy away from prescription medications.

One difficulty with supplements is related to lack of regulation. This means that the amount of active ingredient may vary significantly from brand to brand. Furthermore, there is risk of purchase of counterfeits on some websites (here’s looking at you, Amazon). Given this, I purchase supplements from a reputable supplement vendor called Fullscript. Fullscript has doctor-curated, well-vetted and authentic supplements from multiple companies.
I have hand-selected supplements for general wellness, longevity/aging, sexual/hormonal health, and prostate health which are available in The Shop inside of our office.
